Malvern Challenge 2006

What it's all about?
Over the weekend 30 June - 2 July 06, a patrol consisting of 1 Explorer Scout and 5 Scouts all from Blandford entered the Malvern Challenge. The Malvern Challenge is a fantastic activity packed weekend for scouts and guides under the age of 16, each entering in a team of between 3 and 6 members. This year there were more than 300 teams from all over the country competing in the Malvern Challenge. The Blandford team consisted of:
  • Luke
  • Nikki
  • Adam
  • Owain
  • Josh
  • James

Saturday

The "Challenge" part of the weekend is based around an 8 mile incident hike on the Saturday, during which there are 8 checkpoints that need to be visited. At each checkpoint the team must carry out an activity on which they are marked. The activities this year consisted of rifle shooting, map reading, bridge building, camping skills, abseiling, first aid, knots and mini Olympics.

The weather on the day was extremely hot and the team did well to remain hydrated and to avoid getting sunburnt. Many teams found the conditions too demanding and failed to complete the course, but Blandford persevered and not only completed all the checkpoints, but did well at each one.

Sunday
Sunday morning was taken up participating in numerous activities including Laser Clay Pigeon shooting (see below), Euro bungee, quad train, circus skills, and many many more activities.

Someone MUST get the clay!!

At the closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon, prizes were awarded for the best team at each base and also for the overall winners. Sitting through the closing ceremony was exhausting due to the extreme heat, but spirits were soon lifted when it was announced that Blandford had won the overall competition.
